Enjoy this plant-based alternative to traditional bacon for a delicious and healthy option.
Ingredients
1 block of Extra-Firm Tofu
2 Tablespoons Soy Sauce or Tamari (for a gluten-free option)
1 Tablespoon Liquid Smoke
1 tablespoon Maple Syrup
1 tablespoon Apple Cider Vinegar
1 teaspoon Smoked Paprika
1/2 teaspoon Garlic Powder
1/2 teaspoon Onion Powder
1/4 teaspoon Black Pepper
1 tablespoon Olive Oil (optional, for added crispiness when frying)
Instructions
Drain the tofu and press it to remove excess water. You can use a tofu press or wrap the tofu in a clean kitchen towel and place a heavy object on top (but not too heavy that the tofu cracks). Let it press for at least 15-20 minutes.
Once the tofu is pressed, slice it thinly to resemble bacon strips. Aim for slices about 1/8 inch thick.
In a shallow dish, mix together soy sauce, liquid smoke, maple syrup, apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper. Stir until well combined.
Place the tofu slices in the marinade, making sure each piece is well-coated. Let it marinate for at least 15-20 minutes. For a stronger saltier flavor, marinate for up to a few hours.
You have two options for cooking: baking or pan-frying.
Once cooked, remove the tofu bacon from the oven or skillet and place it on a paper towel-lined plate to remove excess oil if pan-fried.
Serve the tofu bacon hot as a side or in sandwiches, salads, or any dish that calls for bacon.
