Homemade Balsamic Vinegar

Homemade Balsamic Vinegar

If you’re out of balsamic vinegar, don’t worry—this quick and easy homemade substitute delivers that rich, tangy-sweet flavor you love using just a few pantry staples. A blend of apple cider vinegar, soy sauce, and maple syrup (or molasses) creates a well-balanced mix that mimics the depth and slight sweetness of balsamic. Soy sauce adds umami, while the syrup brings that signature mellow richness. It’s perfect for salad dressings, marinades, or drizzling over fruit-based dishes like watermelon salads. For a glaze-like consistency, you can simmer it for a couple of minutes to slightly reduce and thicken it. This swap is simple, affordable, and surprisingly delicious!

Ingredients

1/4 cup Apple Cider Vinegar (or red wine vinegar)

2 Tablespoons Soy Sauce or Tamari (for umami depth)

3 Tablespoons Maple Syrup or Molasses (for sweetness and body)

Optional: 1/4 tsp Garlic Powder or 1/2 tsp Dijon Mustard (for a flavor boost)

Instructions

Whisk all ingredients together in a small bowl or jar until fully combined.

Let it sit for a few minutes to mellow and blend the flavors.

Use as-is for a dressing or simmer in a small saucepan for 3–5 minutes over low heat to thicken into a glaze.
